First-Time Discomfort, and How It Changes
The first one or two sessions were the most uncomfortable, consistent with what most epilator reviews report — mechanical extraction from the root simply hurts more than shaving initially. By the third and fourth sessions, discomfort noticeably decreased, both from skin acclimation and from hair becoming finer with repeated root-level removal over time.
Wet and Dry Use
Using the device in the shower with the wet/dry rating was noticeably more comfortable than dry use — warm water seems to genuinely reduce the pulling sensation, consistent with Braun's own marketing on this feature. We'd recommend wet use for anyone particularly sensitive to the discomfort of epilation.
Results and Smoothness Duration
Smoothness lasted consistently 3-4 weeks between sessions, on the higher end of what's typically claimed for epilation, likely helped by the high tweezer count on the disc head. This is meaningfully longer than shaving (days) though shorter than IPL's long-term reduction once a full treatment course is complete.
Using It Alongside IPL
For hair colors and areas that don't respond to IPL (as covered in our hair color and IPL guide), we found the Silk-épil 9 to be a genuinely useful complement — treating IPL-responsive dark hair with a light-based device while using the epilator for gray, blonde, or red hair in the same general areas. This dual-method approach isn't something manufacturers typically suggest directly, but it addressed a real gap for testers with mixed hair coloring.

Build Quality After Six Months

The Silk-épil 9 delivers on its reputation as a well-built, effective epilator with genuinely longer-lasting smoothness than shaving and a wide head that meaningfully reduces session time on larger areas.
