Braun Silk·Expert Pro 5 Review: Tested for 3 Months

The Braun Silk·Expert Pro 5 is consistently ranked among the top at-home IPL devices, largely on the strength of its SensoAdapt skin tone sensor. After a full 3-month treatment course across legs, underarms, and bikini line, here's how it actually performed.

Setup and First Impressions

The device pairs with a smartphone app that walks through skin tone matching and a mandatory patch test before unlocking full-power settings — a genuinely useful guardrail for first-time users, though experienced users may find the app requirement mildly tedious for quick sessions.

The SensoAdapt Sensor in Practice

This is the feature that sets the Pro 5 apart. Rather than manually selecting an intensity level, the device reads skin tone continuously and adjusts automatically — a light audible or visual cue on the device signals if you're pressing it against an area outside its safe range (like a mole or overly tanned patch). In practice, this removed the guesswork that made manual-intensity devices feel like a gamble in early sessions.

Session-by-Session Results

Sessions 1-2 (weeks 1-2): No visible change yet, as expected — this phase is about establishing tolerance and routine.

Sessions 3-4 (weeks 3-6): Noticeably finer, sparser regrowth on legs and underarms. Bikini line lagged slightly behind, consistent with the general pattern of that area responding more slowly.

Sessions 5-6 (weeks 7-10): Substantial reduction on legs — regrowth was fine enough that shaving frequency dropped from every 2-3 days to roughly once a week. Underarms showed similarly strong results.

By month 3: Legs and underarms showed the most dramatic reduction; bikini line showed clear improvement but not yet at the same level, tracking with the device's own guidance that this area often needs more sessions.

Comfort

Without a cooling tip, sessions on the bikini line were the most uncomfortable part of testing — a mild but noticeable sting on each flash. Legs and underarms were comfortably tolerable throughout, closer to a light snap than genuine pain.

What We'd Change

No cooling tip is the most obvious omission compared to competitors like the Ulike Sapphire Air 3. The companion app, while useful for onboarding, adds a small amount of friction to quick touch-up sessions once you're experienced.

Verdict

The SensoAdapt sensor genuinely earns its reputation — it's the standout reason to choose this device over less sophisticated competitors, especially for first-time IPL users who want a safety net built in. Results tracked closely with typical published timelines, and by month 3 the reduction on legs and underarms was substantial enough to meaningfully change our shaving routine.
