How you prepare your skin before an IPL session meaningfully affects both how comfortable the treatment is and how effective it turns out to be. Most of this is simple, but a few common habits actively work against good results.
1-2 Weeks Before Treatment
Stop waxing, plucking, or threading in the treatment area. These methods remove hair from the follicle — the exact structure IPL needs to target. If you've recently waxed, wait for hair to regrow to the surface (typically 2 weeks) before starting or continuing IPL sessions.
Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Increased melanin from a tan reduces the skin-to-hair contrast IPL depends on and increases burn risk. Most manufacturers recommend at least 2 weeks of sun avoidance (or diligent SPF use) before treatment, longer if you got significant sun exposure.
The Day Of (or Day Before) Treatment
Shave the treatment area. This is the single most important prep step. Hair should be shaved down to skin level — not left long, and not removed at the root. Shaving the same day or the evening before is ideal; hair that's had a day or two to regrow slightly can reduce the risk of surface burns from longer hair catching excess heat.
Cleanse the area thoroughly. Remove any lotion, deodorant, makeup, or sunscreen residue — these can interfere with light penetration or, in some cases, contain ingredients that react unpredictably with the flash.
Do not exfoliate aggressively right before treatment. Mild exfoliation days earlier is fine and can help prevent ingrown hairs, but avoid harsh scrubs or chemical exfoliants (retinoids, AHAs/BHAs) in the 24-48 hours immediately before a session, as they can increase skin sensitivity.
Immediately Before Each Flash Session
Confirm skin is completely dry. Moisture on the skin surface can affect how the device's sensor reads skin tone and can affect comfort during the flash.
Do a patch test if this is a new area, a new device, or your first session in a while. Even experienced users should patch test when treating a new body area for the first time.
Check for any new moles, cuts, or irritation in the area. Skip these specific spots during the session rather than treating over them.
What to Avoid on Treatment Day
- Caffeine or alcohol immediately before, which can increase skin sensitivity for some users
- Hot showers or baths right before treatment, which flush the skin and can increase discomfort
- Any photosensitizing skincare products (retinoids, certain acne treatments) applied to the treatment area that day
Bottom Line
Good IPL prep comes down to three things: shave (don't wax), avoid sun exposure beforehand, and start with clean, dry, product-free skin. Get these right consistently and you'll see both more comfortable sessions and more consistent results.
